Megger Idax322 Insulation Diagnostic Analyser

DFR stands for Dielectric Frequency Response. The test is also known as FDS (Frequency Domain Spectroscopy). DFR is a measurement technique in which capacitance and loss (expressed as dissipation factor/tan delta or power factor) are measured over a variety of frequencies to assess insulation status in test objects. experiments, such as power transformers, bushings, and instrument transformers.

DFR technology is an established laboratory testing process that, through Megger’s innovative efforts, has been adapted for field use through the IDAX family of devices. In transformers, bushings, and instrument transformers, faults are often invisible under conditions where diagnostic tests are easy to perform (usually at room temperature and line frequency).

In contrast, problems are often better exposed to temperatures higher or closer to the operating limits of objects. Unfortunately, the temperature is not easily or effectively controlled in the field test environment. The strength of the DFR test as tan delta or power factor is the basis of the measurements. Tan delta or power factor is mainly a function of insulation system geometry, aging byproducts, humidity, insulation fluid conductivity, frequency, and temperature.

By leveraging the knowledge of these relationships, the assessment of aging by-products, moisture, and conductivity can be performed in the frequency domain, via DFR, rather than in the frequency domain. in the temperature, the domain is much more difficult to control. Therefore, DFR makes it easier to find insulation problems under conditions that can be easily achieved in the field.
