Olympus Magna-Mike 8600 Thickness Gauge

The Olympus Magna-Mike 8600 is a portable thickness gauge that uses a simple magnetic method to make reliable and repeatable measurements on nonferrous materials. It is a small, lightweight instrument designed to make fast, accurate, and repeatable measurements of non-magnetic materials such as plastics, glass, composites, aluminum, and titanium. The Magna-Mike 8600 is a product of Olympus and is widely used in several industries. This article will discuss the features, working principle, calibration, and applications of the Magna-Mike 8600 thickness gauge.

Features

The Olympus Magna-Mike 8600 is available with straight, right-angle, and low-profile articulating magnetic probes. The 86PR-1 and 86PR-2 feature replaceable wear caps to extend the probe’s durability and reduce replacement costs. The Magna-Mike offers an expanded list of target options that greatly extend its measurement capability. The Magna-Mike has an extensive file-based alphanumeric data logger that is designed to store and transfer thickness readings easily. You can store thickness readings in one of four standard file formats: Incremental, Sequential, Sequential with Custom Point, and 2-D Grid. The Magna-Mike 8600 has RS-232 and USB outputs that enable the instrument to send data to an Excel spreadsheet directly. The included WINXL interface program lets you to single-send or file-send thickness readings.

Working Principle

The Olympus Magna-Mike 8600 works on the Hall effect principle. It has a probe and a target ball disk or wire, depending on the sample that is to be tested. The probe has two wearable tips: the standard tip and the chiseled tip. The wire is used to measure the thickness of pipe-like structures; the disk is used for small grooves; the ball is the standard measuring target for flat surfaces. Once the target is placed on the opposite side of the test material, the probe is placed on the other side. The probe’s Hall Effect sensor measures the distance between the probe tip and the target ball. The measurements are instantly displayed on the large color thickness display as an easy-to-read digital thickness reading.

Calibration

The Olympus Magna-Mike 8600 measures thickness by monitoring small changes in a magnetic field. Its calibration process includes an automatic compensation for the effects of the earth’s magnetic field. Most commonly, the probe is held at a constant orientation, vertically in a stand. However, in cases where the probe is used at a different orientation (such as being held horizontally), or when the direction is changing, as in scanning the outside of a curved part, the calibration process is different. The calibration process involves placing the probe on a calibration block with a known thickness. The Olympus Magna-Mike 8600 is available with two types of probes, two types of wear cap tips, and four types of targets to accommodate a range of thicknesses and a wide variety of test piece geometries.

Applications

The Olympus Magna-Mike 8600 can measure the thickness of anything that is nonferrous. It is widely used in several industries, including aerospace, automotive, manufacturing, and packaging. It measures the thickness of non-ferrous materials such as plastics, glass, composites, aluminum, and titanium. The Olympus Magna-Mike 8600 is also used to perform wall thickness gauge testing. It is a very user-friendly device that performs simple operations and measures the thickness of non-ferrous materials like plastics, glass, water tanks, foam, aluminum, PET, etc.
